The word occurs in the King James Version of the Bible in at least two places in Genesis 2. The end of Genesis 2 portrays God as recognizing that it is not good that man (the male, with Adam being the first and only example thus far), should be alone, and that He would make a "help meet" for him (vs 18).
Then He brought all of the animals to show Adam that none of them are suitable as a "help meet" (vs 20) to him (God also had the additional purpose of seeing what Adam would name each of the animals (vs 19-20)). After showing Adam that none of the animals are suitable for him as a "help meet" (vs 20), God made a woman (Eve), for that purpose, from the man's rib (vs 21-24).
So, "meet" means more-or-less what we mean by "suitable" today. The passage above indicates that woman is a suitable help and companion to the man.
