The thing to do is look at the CSS and remove all line-height lines.
The next thing to do is cean up whatever mess there is. This is something that has to be done by hand. That means cleaning the CSS and all the XML. I've seen some pretty good messes come from Word. It may take some time, but once done, the book will be better for it.
