One issue could be that we don't actually know whether the author is being paid per borrow, or whether a certain amount of the book has to be read (on an authorised app/device) as with some subscription systems. Later versions of ADE are said to support payment models other than per borrow, I don't know if those features are actually used by any libraries yet, but it is likely that removing DRM and readng outside the authorised environment would interfere with them.
