Thank you Robko, I have first signed out of the Kobo account (thanks Davidfor!) and then followed your instructions. The Reader now shows a black screen with "Powered off". I'll let it rest a while and then power it back up and see if things have been repaired.

I a way it's strange that in it's the "powered off"-state the Reader still keeps showing this text because it seems to indicate that in reality it isn't powered off. After all showing that text must somehow use some power by itself, wouldn't it?
