And that before they are sealed in their box, they are put into "shipping mode" - which among other things prevents them from trying to update while in the box.

People are still reporting that the new devices they have purchased have 5.8.7.0.1 or earlier installed on them.
So until all of those that filled the last container (before the factory started installing something newer) are sold off, this thread may have some use.

Amazon does not publish sales figures for the Kindles.
So that is about all the 'facts' we have to go on.

I would think the factory ships (no pun intended) once a financial quarter but you may very well be correct, that there is at least 6 months worth of stock out there waiting for people to purchase them.

Now if we just had a few 'stock watchers' in Singapore (I am guessing Singapore gets first off the line, maybe even before China does) to let us know when 5.8.8 (or newer) starts showing up in the large wholesalers . . ..

For those not following my reasoning:
A major industry in Singapore is the sale (wholesale and retail) of electronic goods.
They have some of the largest malls and sales facilities in the world.
I was just going by the approximate time frames on previous firmwares.
I was also thinking it would make financial sense to manufacture roughly a 6 month stock at a time. I figure Amazon has a reasonable idea of how many of a device they will sell. Plus, they can put more than one type of kindle in that shipping container. I am guessing one plant somewhere makes most ereaders.
