BetterRed's approach, having a separate library to act as Purgatory, works well and is great when dealing with large batches of new books needing work. I only "batch" add 1-3 books on any one weekend and take a "lighter weight" approach.

I've set calibre, in Prefs>Add Books, to add an additional tage "new addition" when adding books. This allows be to easily fine new additions even after I've done something that causes calibre to refresh the library list (e.g. quit and restart later, ...). I remove the "new addition" tag when I've finished massaging the new book.
