I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I control the frontlight manually rather than relying on Kobo's automatic adjustments, because I find the automatic level eye-searingly bright.

Nope, works fine for me on my KA1. I also have it on manual control. Sounds like something is messed up in your firmware.
