One more nit to mention -
The jailbreak survives if you have to switch the Kindle to "Demo Mode" to downgrade it and then switch it back to "User Mode" to upgrade it.
Been there, done that (and was the second to write it up).

But I don't think anyone has tried that route with 5.8.8 or 5.8.9 (yet).
If someone wants to possible waste a Kindle, tell us what happens (in your own thread).
At least mention the color of the smoke.
