All eInk devices flash when they refresh the screen. Some devices allow you to set the interval of "page" turns between flashes.

Maybe go and look at one? IIRC with it at 1% it's like a very faint glow only noticeable when in a completely black/dark room, otherwise regular room light drowns it out. Others will know more about this as I don't have a PW (although I can lay hands on one). Not sure if the current Nook, which is the other B&M option in the US) can have the light turned all the way off or not.
