Those are hyphens, Jon. Dashes are either en dashes (usually British or between a range of numbers) or em dashes (usually American). Hyphens are the shortest horizontal line, en dashes are slightly longer than hyphens (the width of an "n" in typography), and em dashes are the longest of all (the width of an "m"). Ten-year-old boy uses hyphens, not dashes.
