Fixed! Thanks again, David.
For anyone else confused about how to translate the instructions from that other page (linked in post #2) into how to resurrect your corrupted etc Kobo:
First, the links for the Flash Drive Image Creator and Flash Drive Image Writer only seem to take you to a "vconsole" front page now, so Google "Flash Drive Image Writer" etc for actual links where you can download the tools.
You can use the Flash Drive Image Creator to copy the image off your existing Kobo, although if it's like mine it's probably knackered anyway so won't really do you any good.
But, if you can get a working image on this site (which, for a Glo should be just under 2GB in size), just use Flash Drive Image Writer to write the image onto the SD card from inside your Kobo, reinsert the SD card, then use the reset hole to restart your Kobo and it should return to life (factory reset and without content, obviously). Then you can use the Kobo desktop app to update it (if you wish).
The hardest part of the process is probably getting the back off the Kobo, but search YouTube for someone disassembling your model and you should find some good clues.
