Well, now you have me totally bamboozled! I installed the mark6 version luxim posted (kobo-update-4.4.9344.zip, file size 84,648,827 md5checksum: b0208d75e861176f504df0a1ce2ddbf2, sha256checksum: dab8f716d93deb35b86cb3c613185bf06dbf43b248467f88c3 69763ab035ef0b) on both my mark6 devices (GloHD, KA1) without any problems with either the main fw update or the application of 4.4.9344 patches.

In both cases Settings - Device information displays: 4.4.9344 (6f700792a0, 16/05/2017)
