I have to assume that I'm wrong on the rate at which the battery will degrade, but based on my experience, there's an alarm bell going off in my mind telling me that there's going to be problem in a couple of years with battery life.

If you're that concerned, then return it, of course. However, people who have owned it since the release date are NOT seeing the scenario that you are concerned about.
