Update ebook on Kindle while preserving reading position?

I read fanfic on my kindle using a very specific workflow:

1) Use the Fanficfare plugin to download the fic
2) Convert the EPUB to an AZW3
3) Send the AZW3 to the kindle.

However, if a fic updates, the only way to get the update on the kindle is to remove the document from the kindle and then add the updated one; this causes my position to be lost.

Is there any good way to replace the file on the Kindle but save my reading position?
