I saw something similar after I upgraded from 3.19 to 4.2, but I think it is because something has changed with the metadata that the Kobo server is sending out for synced books. After the upgrade some of my high-resolution cover images were replaced with low-resolution ones, and also a lot of the other metadata that I had used Calibre to correct got replaced with the publisher's original faulty metadata.

(This only hapened to synced KePub books, none of the metadata for my sideloaded ePubs was touched. So now all my synced books look pretty shabby comapred to the sideloaded ones.)
