I did try reseating the SD card, and the H2O happily takes ebooks from calibre as long as they aren't on the card, though Calibre will see the books on the card.
If I load books to the card through Calibre, Calibre sees them and reports them as being on the device UNTIL I disconnect and reconnect. Then Calibre doesn't see the books on the device anymore, although I can still see the books in the directory of the SD card itself. I did this twice, but it may be a random occurrence. Leaving the house, so can't test this again until later.

Edit: This only happens to books loaded after 4.4.9298. All books loaded prior to upgrading to 4.4.9298 show up as "on device" in Calibre consistently. Only books loaded after the 4.4.9298 upgrade disappear (in Calibre) after disconnecting and reconnecting.
