Concerning the question whether one should use "partial update" or "full update" when installing a kobo firmware upgrade under KSM, there is the following statement in a

So let me repeat here that the recommended way is to choose "
partial update." For this will preserve the installed KSM. Preserving KSM when upgrading the firmware is the main reason for having the "partial update" option.
