Every Android device contains proprietary software. Although the operating system core is open source, things like drivers, reading apps, etc, most assuredly are not. That's just the same as Amazon eInk devices, where the core Linux o/s is open source, but the things that sit on top of it are not. Android devices are no less proprietary than Amazon ones.
