Try it.
Having it registered or not registered will not change the chances of being able to recover from a failure state.
But keep in mind, every change to the registration state causes the application key store to be wiped.
So why wipe something you just went to a lot of trouble to install, only to have to re-install stuff?
Get the registration state set to suit your needs, then do the jailbreak procedure followed by leaving the registration state alone.
Note:
In many of the Amazon firmware versions, registering the device is also your agreement to the EULA they want you to agree to.
Not everyone finds that a suitable state of affairs - requiring the agreement to the EULA just to use features the device was advertised as offering the purchaser.

I wonder what the FTC has to say about that.
None of the Amazon advertising has qualifiactions or disclaimers on the feature descriptions such as: "only available to registered devices".
