Well, the step by step manual in post #1 recommends to firstly register a Kindle "out of the box" with an Amazon account, before doing a jb.

I've experiences with 4 different current 7th and 8th generation models (my two mentioned left, and a KV and KOA respectively of two friends of mine, whom I helped with the a bit tricky procedure, because they are no computer nerds ). And I've none of these registered with Amazon before.

Step by step:
a) Get them out of the box.
b) Make a first function test, i.e. set language but skip the Wifi settings (so the device was never ever connected to whatever internet server).
c) Just to make sure: "reset to factory defaults" (may even be skipped)
d) as b)
e) Perform the jailbreak as described here.

Never have had any problems with preinstalled firmwares 5.7.x and especially 5.8.x ...

BTW: It's also safe to shortly connect a factory-new Kindle to the internet. This e.g. synchronizes the clock. And could also begin with the download of the unwanted fw update. But this takes some minutes. And even if the complete file is on your Kindle - don't panic: When connecting via USB, you'll find it there and simply delete it. Just make sure not to perform a local reboot - then the auto-update could start and you're lost with the software jb...
