That is too new for it to only be a hardware failure.
The battery swelled, putting just enough pressure on the back of the display to break it.
Either a bad battery or a bad battery management chip/firmware.
If you lay a straight-edge across the back, top to bottom, you can probably find that the back of the case is no longer flat.
