Well, now I have to retract my snarky comment (since I thought it was a bit ridiculous that so many words where spent discussing something that could be trivially demonstrated as being false): I checked in a pitch dark room and there's a faint glow, indeed — so the light is not *totally* off as I thought. Mea culpa.
I'm not here to defend the Kindle, btw, but when the slider is at zero the light is so faint that can only be noticed in a pitch dark room — and barely. There will be absolutely zero impact when reading because it's completely unnoticeable when there's any incident light at the screen. The only thing to be annoyed about is the unnecessary waste of battery.
Changing subject since I'm posting anyway, I still have an old Kindle DX and I would love to own a Max, but I find it simply too expensive for what it does. I don't need it *that* badly. Plus I find it ridiculous that a brand new, expensive device in 2017 is running Android 4.x.
