But today, when I tried to access Calibre through CC, it claimed "Library is read only", and said that the folder to which I had already downloaded over 200 books was somehow read only. I am running the most recent version of Fire OS, which is not based on Android 4.4 (which the message suggests might be the problem). I don't know why it's suddenly not working. And I am not happy. What is going on here?

First, sorry that you aren't happy.
The Fire has a bad habit of revoking permissions for SD cards when it does OS upgrades. This leaves CC without access to the folders. Usually you can fix this in CC by reselecting the folder(s). In CC go to Settings / Formats and folders, then select the same folder. CC will ask Android for new permissions. CC will also say something about moving books, which you can ignore because CC will discover that the source and destination are the same.
