The Solitary Garden was Elizabeth von Arnim's second book. Like her other twenty or so books it is witty, and semi-autobiographical -- at least in the sense that what she wrote was as much a reflection of what she would have like to have happened as what actually happened. There is more description of her garden and interraction with her daughters and husband than plot.
The source text was taken from the University of Melbourne ebook library, and checked against other sources. I have silently corrected typos, replaced italics and diacritics, made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com, and provided translations of French and German phrases with the greatly appreciated help of readers on the Deutches and Francais forums.
