If you want the fastest updates, connect to a computer and find the 'affiliate.conf' file in the .kobo directory of your device. Change the affiliate to 'RakutenBooks', and you should get the latest firmware.
Note that that will also change your kobo web browser homepage to Rakuten.co.jp. Also, I think rakutenbooks is supposed to be all lowercase.
