The "not found" message will include how much work the indexer needs to complete.

Although I haven't seen any reports that it still works on 5.8.7 or newer.
Try it, let us know if the information is still included in the message (it will not be if the indexer is caught up).
You will probably have to drop several books onto the Kindle at the same time to give yourself a chance to enter the search that will fail command.
