Yes, use the special folder name, described in Step #7 before you start.

Updates are large files (100Mbyte+) they do not download instantaneously.
So just don't go browsing and shopping, register and press "airplane mode on". You can browse, shop and play with features after the jail break.

Depending on the firmware your device is running, with that blocker folder name, you may get a pop-up panel about it having an update fail, if so:
Press "Airplane mode on".
Connect Kindle to PC, so you can see user storage.
Put the blocker folder name back in place (for the next time it tries).
