I read once in one of those comparative international business etiquette books that the “cowboys and Indians” mythology of the Wild West was extremely popular in parts of Europe (especially Germany and Italy, IIRC), possibly because the landscape and lawless solitude etc. themes are so incredibly different from the experience of growing up in an Old World country, and a big chunk of local popular entertainment was devoted to or inspired by it (cf. the œuvre of Italian director Sergio Leone, inventor of the Spaghetti Western).
So it was advised for visiting Americans that something Wild West-related in terms of memorabilia was on the list of appropriate Americana business gifts, if one couldn't manage to select something more personalized for the recipient (and the always popular duty-free liquor from the airport shop wouldn't do).
