Yup, that's right, all I got was a spinning beachball. And when I tried to disable the other Kobo plugins, calibre wouldn't let me.

I'll try again later today - we're going out to an event shortly (as soon as himself gets back from town).
In Windows if the devices is already connected, then a message to that affect is displayed. I don't know if OSX is different. But, you should be able to disable the KoboTouch driver. I don't know of a reason it would be different elsewhere.

In any case, I have an idea about how to fix this. The device details should help me check this.
