Probably the general outline is true, but detailed parts are fictionalized. Especially things like conversations, those are likely to be largely fiction, because very few people remember conversations from decades ago verbatim!
That reminds me, I liked how they fictionalized the story in the
Hacksaw Ridge movie. They changed some stuff, but kept the overall true story intact. It was amusing that they left some stuff out because it sounded too crazy for people to believe it was really true.
