Plugins only affect the books in calibre and how they're sent to the device. They don't affect the device itself.
Plugins I'd recommend are the Kobo utilities and the kepub conversion (either in the Kobo Touch extended device driver, or the explicit conversion plugin).
Mods to the device itself are handled by the various patches in the developers forum. Find the patch thread for your specific firmware level and check out what is available.
There are no patches to change the touch zones.
