There must have been a bad run of batteries or maybe something wrong with the charging circuits in the original K1 rev. A lithium ion battery like what comes with the K1 should have a 3 year service life before you really start seeing degradation.

I've had my Kindle now for 10 months and the batter holds the charge just as long now as it did when it was new. I usually charge it when it is about 1/3-1/4 full on the meter (estimate since the meter has no graduations on it).
