Can't connect to wifi

My precious can't sync anymore.

Background: The Aura H2O has been connecting to wifi and syncing just fine since I first set it up in the evening of my birthday a couple of years ago. However, it no longer has the ability to connect to the home wifi that used to work just fine.

I've removed all network information, restarted the e-reader and scanned for networks. Found the one that used to work, entered all the relevant information - nothing. (Yes, the wifi network is working. My laptop and all the other devices connect just fine.)

I took the Aura in to work where we have an open guest wifi for visitors to use, and attempted to connect there. Same issue, the reader can't connect. I did a soft reset with a paperclip I found at my desk, but it made no difference.

I'm assuming next step is a factory reset?

If that fails, what is the next step after that? To accept that there is a hardware issue and learn to live without the sync between reader and phone app? The warranty is long since over, so Kobo won't be able to help me.
