Kobo has multiple resolutions depending what price point you're willing to pay, waterproof option, comfort light option and 3 different screen sizes. How is that any less hardware variation than Kindle? Just because not all of these devices may have options you or I may want or care about (from both companies), that doesn't mean that they don't both have quite a variation in options across their product line.

basic kindle no light, paperwhite light, light or lack of light being the difference between the two , Kindle Voyage as page sensor's a difference from the paperwhite.
then the Oasis rotates nice feature if you want it, again another difference from the other three Kindles already mentioned, i hope this helps to clear up any confusion regarding my own particular thought process.
and of course i understand and really don't mind if you don't agree with it
