Do you have time to buy a cheap no-contract phone (NCP) and set it up to use as a second e-reader on the flight? You can usually do this over Wi-Fi without activating the phone, if you are willing to put up with the occasional dismissable reminder to activate it.

this post for info on various models, and at the bottom of the post there is a link to info about using the NCP as an audio player, but since most of them run standard Android, you can also get your preferred ereader (Kindle, Kobo, Aldiko, MoonReader, whatever) on there and use as a small-ish ereader.
I read almost exclusively on my real phone, so I carry a backup NCP phone whenever I am traveling or am going to be out and about for a long time, and am worried about battery life on my real phone, which also has to act as a phone
