Before you give up on it though, I would recommend you come up with a list of things you can do the old way that are no longer possible if you don't ever access the library folder. Chances are, with a little customization you can do the same thing in Calibre in a nearly identical (and sometimes superior) way.
If you want, after you create the list, post it here on the forums and ask the rest of us if there are ways to do the same things in Calibre.

To be honest there is very little I do either the old way or using Calibre.
I have my books in a directory structure where they are organised by genre i.e. Biographies, Travel, Humour, Science etc. and when I want to add some new books to my reader I just fire up a file manager (XYPlorer in my case) and click on the books I have chosen to read and drag them into a 'Books' folder on my Kobo.
If I were to do the same in Calibre I would have to add all my books to its database, and presumably organise them into the relevant genres, and then I could again select the ones I want to add and click send to device.
I have done that a couple of times and I have yet to find a way of making Calibre put the books in the 'Books' folder on my Kobo.
As I tend to keep only a few books on my reader at any one time to be honest I really can't see the advantages of using Calibre.
I only started down this path because I asked a question about Kobo's desktop software in the Kobo forum and everyone kept saying I should use Calibre.
I am very grateful for all the help and suggestions but I am thinking I will probably just stick with what I've done in the past.
