I hoped the update might fix the second one. But if I get it working again, I am tempted to copy your approach.
Those are usually indications of the database on the device being corrupt. Signing out of the Kobo account, generates a new database and reloads the books.

But, it could also be a sign the clock was wrong. If the order of books on the home screen or library lists didn't change, then I'd go with this.
