I think that's related to the myth that epub is somehow the standard and Kindle formats are non-standard. In fact the mobi format was around for several years before epub, more books are sold in Kindle formats by far than in epub, and mobi books are available from a lot of sources, not just from Amazon.
The fact is that there is no standard format for ebooks and if you just have to pick one Kindle formats are the more likely choice.
