Alas, I wasn't being absurd. I have seen too many scanned books that the scanner was just trying to make a quick buck. So they scan, run through an OCR, upload.
Hey if your friend does take the time to make sure his books are good, then he should earn money off of them and not expect that self-entitled people to want him to work for free.
Look here is the thing, I have been told because I don't have a job, I should do something for someone else for free because my time is not valuable but because they "work" their time is valuable.
Well guess what, whatever they wanted done by me was not done.
I don't watch kids free, and I am not going to risk my hands or my eyes for some egotistical idiot. My time is as valuable as yours. I have paid my dues. Neither me, nor your friend owe the world anything.
Look if he wants to do it as a hobby cool, but there is no reason to say there is no cost.
Everyone's time is worth something.
There is no excuse or reason for saying there is no cost to an ebook.
Whether it is a file or a car, if one is not entitled to it and one takes it, it is stealing.
But please keep justifying it to oneself.
If you obtain something illegally, that is theft.
As to the justifying, I consider those people slightly lower than a guy I used to know. At least he admitted he took stuff from stores.
