Serialized fiction is pretty old school. The Pickwick Papers was publised from April 1836 to November 1937. There were a lot of Oz books published, or course these were more independent stories set in the same world rather than the next chapter of a larger story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the Foreigner series. I think a good series ought to have an ending in each book, even if there is a larger story that isn't yet resolved. In my opinion, the author should wrap up some of the loose ends by the end of each book. My willingness to read a series is directly proportional to how likely I think it is that the author will continue publishing. It's disappointing to read the first book in a series only to discover that there is no second book and likely won't be a second book.
