I ask around. Between reviews, Goodreads, and/or the author's website ... somebody can usually give me the skinny. And if I can't find out for sure beforehand, then I usually don't start reading. And many times, even if I
DO find out beforehand, I won't start reading it (when the answer isn't the one I want, obviously).
