Perhaps what has increased is that more items are not available to ship out the same day we order, perhaps due to an expanded marketplace of sellers, or cost-saving JIT inventory systems. When almost everything they sold was ready to ship same day, we just got kind of spoiled that 2-day shipping also resulted in us getting it delivered in two days from order.

Last week I put a 2-day order in the shopping cart then noticed during checkout it was not scheduled for delivery for two weeks. I deleted the item. The issue is that Amazon often uses multiple merchants to fill the orders. The web page on which I put the item in the shopping cart said not only "Prime 2-day delivery" but it also stated "get it by [2 days from the purchase date]". In those cases, then 2-day delivery has been further described by a date two days in the future, therefore "2-day delivery" literally means purchase today by a certain time and get it two days from today. But if they have more than one merchant selling the item, you never know what you will get as far as delivery until it pops up in the shopping cart. In my case I deleted the item, returned to the web page for the item, and selected an alternative merchant who had it for the same price and actually offered 2-day delivery from date of purchase.
