On Windows I keep a DOCX or PDF for all books to provide a search-able format, this allows me to use Windows Search, I have the Windows Indexer set up to index the library folders, for me doing that has no noticeable effect on performance (main library > 100,000 books). I also use the X1 Search tool when I want to peek at the books found.

Average search time for both is more or less instantaneous. I use the Drop Search Results to Mark the books Windows Search or X1 finds, from there I can create a reading list, or add a tag to all books etc.

Also means I can include texts that are not in a calibre library in the search - e.g. emails, blog posts, disqus comments etc.
