Help needed on a search parameter

I've looked many time but cannot figure this out...so...

I'm trying to do a search across multiple books at once in epub format that involve a character.

If, for example, I wanted to search for s* regardless of case or if surrounded by other characters, how can I accomplish this.

I've tried this and variations of it in Quality Check/Search ePubs/Plain text only and ignoring case.
Variations include \s* and /s*, but whatever I do returns false positives. I tried it in the HTML search also through this plugin.

I need to do this as a batch operation, so a book by book search isn't worth it.

Anyone out there who knows this part better and can help?
