FWIW, I use a custom rsync script to keep my Kindle backed up, annotations and all.  Restoring that to a new Kindle should work just fine, as will restoring to a reset Kindle.
Scripting things often allows for greater control than pre-packaged solutions.

I'm not even sure you're still active here or not, but I had to reply. I never saw your post, having lost all my tabs during an unfortunate computer self-immolation shortly after writing here.
Anyhow, I wanted to thank you! I also speak rsync, and while that is not what I needed for my solution, it made me realize I can recover from issues simply by restoring a backup, which I make by simply dragging 'documents' off to a dated directory on my mac, but I now realize rsync would be more efficient.
I don't need Calibre to save the sidecar (.sdr) folders because *I* can. And now that I know how complicated that folder is, I can see why Kovid avoids the whole issue like the plague!
