You can purchase it without Special Offers to begin with.
Having Special Offers does not effect the jailbreak, but it does get in the way of recovering if something goes wrong.

Also, you can't use custom screen savers with an S.O. device.

Read Step #7, add the blocker directory name before going on-line.
That should help.

Don't dawdle on-line, do your business and get-off, the update is a large file, it takes some time to download.

You can jail break and then register the device if you wish -
some firmware versions make that more difficult, but it is a choice.
