For PDFs no ereader is truly a good choice. You need a tablet or laptop for that. They are also a poor choice for note taking. Web browsing is barely supported on some kindles, you are pretty much limited to accessing the Amazon store for buying ebooks if you have a kindle or Barnes and Noble if you have a Nook. Tablets are all backlit like your computer screen, some ebook readers only front lit. Better get a tablet where you can have multiple apps to meet your needs, no ereader has the functions you need.
