I have two Kobos (HD and Aura One) and several Kindles (out of which I use Paperwhite and Oasis).
I don't patch my Kobo (don't know how) and I use Kepub plugin in Calibre and send kepubs to it (I am not using epubs on Kobo because first time I tried it, they looked more than awful).
So my Kobo Aura One - kepubs experience is that it is almost impossible to pull references in the book, be it a nonfiction book with a lot of references or lit fiction (translated or not) which again sometime has references (I am reading translated works of Emile Zola at the moment, and references are one or two per page on average).
Apart from that, my main objection to Kobo (coming from experience with Kindle) is the dictionary which is extremely bad compared with Kindle dictionaries (I am not reading dictionaries, I just want to be able to see definitions when I need them). Additionally, again as a Kindle user, highlighting parts of the text and exporting the highlights is really bad on Kobos.
Therefore, I use Kindle for nonfiction and for lit fiction with a lot of references, and Kobo Aura One for reading fiction without many references (for which it is my best device because of the fonts and size).
So, my reply would be
buying Aura One would not be a good idea if it will be the only e-reader for a user who reads nonfiction or other works with references and also for a person who plans to read a lot of books in a language which is not his/her mother tongue
