There are workarounds to improve PDF performance. If your PDF matches the screen size and does not need zooming, the Aura One will work fairly well out of the box (although Kobo doesn't support text reflow). Pre-processing large PDFs on your PC by cropping them improves the Aura One's perfomance performance quite a lot. In addition, complex PDFs tend to be slower, especially if they include high-resolution graphics. Downsampling embedded graphics to reduce the size can make a significant difference. There are programs which will do both of these for you - for example, K2PDF. The results aren't uniformly fantastic, but it may be worth a try.
You can also improve the Aura One's PDF performance by installing Koreader (a third-party application). There is an active forum here discussing Koreader.
