That is not correct, it is not "wonky" at all. While in my experience collections created on series metadata sorted on the series index number by default (I never fussed myself why they were so as it was never an issue for me as they always sorted that way) one can define the sort order when sending the books to the T1 collections.

Look under Tweaks in in Calibre's Preferences for the tweak "Specify how Sony Collections are Sorted" where you will see how to do this. Again, I found that for sorting on series index it always reliably did so for me without specifying it in the tweak.
